Absolutely five stars, A woman who had no desire to teach high school became a success in spite of her plans. Published originally as My Posse Don't Do Homework Readers Digest picked it up for one of their books.
As an education student who is planning on teaching in inner city schools, I found this book to be a wonderful read. It gave some real perspective along with new ideas to approach old problems. It was nice to hear some positive stories of a person who experienced the tough school systems.
Ms. Johnson captured the essence of what a truly effective teacher does to reach their students, and also let's us know that there are times when all those strategies are not enough. Every classroom deserves a similar teacher.
As a high school teacher earlier in my life, I cared deeply about my students, so I admire much of this teacher's efforts to improve the lives of her young people, however, I thought she sometimes crossed the lines of what is truly appropriate.
I absolutely love this book! I was lucky enough to have the Author, Mrs. Johnson as my 9th grade English teacher. I had always liked the movie, but after knowing her, the book has a more personal feel to it.
