I have read hundreds of romance novels and find myself to be very ungenerous with my reviews. I can count in one hand the number of five-star ratings I have given and two of those have been for LK books. While Lessons in French falls well short of my “Holy Grail of Romance Novels” one-hand list, it is in the solid category of “Pretty Damm Good”. Like so many other readers, i find it hard to explain what, exactly, makes LK so different. But her stories leave me full somehow. Her characters are so true to life, her couples perfect in their imperfect yearning to be loved and understood, even while they don’t understand themselves. None of her scenes or dialogue is wasted; they all lead the reader to understand how fear of being truly known keeps people apart. If you have read LK before, this is a nice deviation from her darker stories but with a H/h that are classically flawed in the LK way. If you have not read LK before, please don’t start here. Read Flowers from the Storm or the Shadow and the Star. She will either become the standard by which you judge all others, or you will be saving some kindle bucks by not reading her other books.Tags : Lessons in French [Laura Kinsale] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Ms Kinsale's books are always a treat. LIF reminds me of her first books, with lovely humor and romance. It's not as deep a story as some of her later books, but a refreshing reminder of why she became one of my favorite writers in the first place. I always enjoy her endearing animal characters, and Hubert is no exception. He put me in mind of a blue bull named Tommy, a pleasant childhood memory. As always, I love her heroes, and Trev is no exception. He and Callie are a perfect match, and the ending was all I could have hoped for in a HEA.
Laura Kinsale is the best writer of romantic fiction I have ever found. She finds what could be a handicap and expands the reader's knowledge of it to the fascination and delight of the reader. Lessons in French concerns a heroine who had a childhood adventure with the local French neer-do-well and is discovered by her father, who separates the young lovers and cuts the young man with his whip.Years pass before they meet again, when his mother becomes ill and he returns from a scandalous lifestyle as a fight promoter to be present at her bedside. All lives are complicated by a prize-winning bull and several desirous owners of said bull!
A very unusual love story.
I loved this! It's absolutely delightful. I suppose it was a bit silly at times, but I smiled so often, and had so much fun reading it that I don't care. I got this through KU, but that allowed me to buy it in audio, so when I'm done listening to the book I started recently I will be listening to this. I wanted to shake Callie more than a few times, but Trev was amazing in every way. A fun, mostly angst free romp through the countryside, that I will read/listen to again and again.
This book is such a heart-warming and funny story about two people trying to tell each other they love each other. I couldn't stop laughing, from beginning to end- the wit is nonstop. I thought I was watching "I Love Lucy" crossed with "Dick Van Dyke." This was SO worth reading- both for the very sweet love between the two main characters, the supporting characters including Hubert the Bull, and the hysterically funny dialogue. It's a bit slapstick-ish, and you won't be bored, going from "episode" to "episode."
I want to add that the Publisher's Weekly synopsis of the book listed on the page is very misleading, and it is clear that the writer of this synopsis either did not read the book or just skimmed it. The hero's name is "Trevelyan," not "Trevelyn." And he was not convicted of forgery as their romance was rekindled - he was convicted years before that - a point that was pretty clear in the book, and essential to the plot. So I wouldn't take much stock in a synopsis that is this grossly inaccurate. This book is NOT "by-the-numbers"......on the contrary, it is hilarious, unusual, sweet, very tongue in cheek, with plot twists you don't see coming, and worth every moment you take to read it.
Pure enjoyment!
I have Laura Kinsale books that I have read many times. This one will not be added to that list. The book actually started out well. Lady Callie is unlike most heroines of that time period. She is respected in her neighborhood for raising prime show cattle. She is also well known for having been jilted three times. When her teenage crush returns to the neighborhood, she rekindles (sort of) a fledgling romance. It is at this point that the whole plot becomes a jumble of sub-plots and odd characters that started to drive me crazy. I never picked up on any real chemistry between the H/h and the whole "hiding the bull thing" was cartoonish. I finally resorted to skimming to finish the book and the ending was....okay, I guess. I will read another Laura Kinsale, but I will never reread this one.
Yes, this book is delicious. The hazy, lazy, fog that descends upon Callie when Trev is near, especially when close enough to touch is beyond fantasy. But, even as this sweetness sucks the reader further into the relationship, in my opinion, the best part of this book is the lovely dialogue between Trev and Callie.
In giving Trev his unique personality and communication skills - not just with Callie, but in the way he jokes and banters around with everyone, Ms. Kinsale's gift is further revealed and one can judge it for what it is - pure genius. Indeed, few writers can compare with her ability to make the reader feel what the primary characters are thinking and feeling to the point, it becomes empathic. Even the way Trev communicated with his mama and his hired help was absolutely fascinating.
The only comparison I can make to the dialogue featured in this book would be the letters at the beginning of "My Sweet Folly" where we once again have the best of Ms. Kinsale's unique gift. I dare say, few authors in this genre compare when up against this type of banter and dialogue, although Sherry Thomas does come to mind, however, in my experience, her books have a much more serious bent than what we find in "Lessons in French."
