Oh My Stars A Novel Lorna Landvik 9780345468369 Books Reviews

A wonderful book full of excitement and very interesting characters. It is so full of interesting characters and occurrences. There are wonderful things happening and unhappy things, so it keeps you wondering from page to page. You will thoroughly enjoy reading this book.
This is the second book by Lorna I have read and it is as good as housewives eating bon bon. I enjoyed it and now am on to another book by her.
Lorna Landvik excels with this masterful tale of Violet Mathers, an ugly duckling, deserted by her mother, beaten by her father, and just to make sure she has more than her share of misery, a horrible accident that causes the loss of her arm. But an amazing thing happens to Violet on her way to commit suicide. Violet's life has taught her that when things look as bleak as can be, they can still get bleaker. And her bus ride to San Francisco for the express purpose of jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge proves that point. How she winds up on a farm in North Dakota, how she meets the man she will love forever but who can never love her in the way she needs him to, how lemons truly become lemonade is about the most uplifting, heart-wrenching story I've had the pleasure of reading.

Her dreams of being a fashion designer may have died with the loss of her arm, but a life she never envisioned rises up to meet her. Through a series of circumstances Violet could never have dreamed, she finds herself traveling through the United States as a band manager during the Great Depression. Twenty years before Elvis, a beautiful and charismatic man named Kjel Hedstrom had young girls swooning and grown men wanting to join the band. His relationship with Violet, the other band members he brings into her life, and the unforgettable adventures of the Pearltones will keep you mesmerized. Be forewarned that this book will not end as you expect, and perhaps not as you would have wished, but end it does and don't be surprised if your tears of sorrow and joy have stained the pages.
I loved this book. I ignored holiday chores to read it, which I've paid for dearly.

A compelling story that is well written, and each chapter leaves you hoping you have time to read the next.

Even the unlikable character who shows up later in the book is understandable.

For me, this is a story of a combination of determination and being in the right place at the right time, intense joy and extreme sadness. I loved the language (and the correct grammar, which is very important to me).

If you enjoy family/human drama, you will enjoy this story.
Violet Mathers was a tall, awkward 13 year old, with a chin too big for her face. All her life she had been told she was ugly, and she believed it. Abandoned by her mother when she was six, her father showed her no affection, but abused her verbally and beat her regularly. Her only joy was found in designing and sewing clothes she made from old tablecloths and scraps she obtained from the local church bazaar. Robbed of her ability to sew and design, she lost her arm in a factory accident at the age of 16. Told by her father that she was useless, she decides to run away from home at age 18. She hops on a bus and heads for San Francisco where she plans to end her life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Fate steps in however, when the bus is involved in an accident and she is rescued by a young man named Kjel Hedstrom and his Negro friend, Austin.

That chance meeting changes her life forever, as Violet sets out on a whirlwind adventure with her new found friends. Ultimately she finds that she can love and be loved by learning to accept and love herself. It is a poignant story filled with hope, joy, and sadness, but a worthwhile read.
